TW: Pregnancy and Baby Loss. Please delete this email if this content about stillbirth and miscarriage support at work is triggering for you.
Next week is Baby Loss Awareness Week. Although sombering, we shouldn’t shy away from these statistics:
- Approximately 1 in 4 pregnancies end in miscarriage
- In 2021, 1 in every 250 pregnancies ended in stillbirth
- About 1 in 100 women in the UK experience recurrent miscarriages (3 or more in a row)
With most of these losses occurring in people who are of working age, miscarriage support at work is unequivocally a workplace concern.
The Pregnancy Loss Review 2023
Published alongside last month’s Pregnancy Loss Review (a long-awaited independent report on NHS miscarriage care and how it can be improved), the Government shared their vision for improving the care of people who experience pre-24-week baby loss. Amongst many other recommendations, this included:
“Employers recognise the impact of baby loss on employees and human resources (HR) policies are updated to support their staff.”
Considering recent research has found that 24% of people considered leaving their job due to their experience at work after their loss (CIPD report 2022), this is a huge step in the right direction.
